Today we honor HLH warrior Ethan

In November 2025, Ethan was admitted to the hospital with severe body pain and persistent fevers. After three long weeks of testing and uncertainty, he was diagnosed with Hemophagocytic Lymphohistiocytosis (HLH).

Ethan then spent two weeks at the VG Hospital in Halifax undergoing chemotherapy and receiving blood transfusions. After completing treatment, his family was told he was responding well, had handled chemotherapy remarkably, and was finally able to return home.

What they didn't know was how critical the first few weeks after treatment could be.

On December 24, Ethan suddenly became extremely ill. He collapsed, was unable to move, and was rushed to Cape Breton Regional Hospital, where he was placed on full life support. Doctors discovered that he was bleeding internally, but initially struggled to determine the source of the bleeding or how to stop it.

On December 25, Ethan was airlifted back to Halifax and admitted to the ICU at the QEII. After waking up, he began suffering multiple small strokes in the back of his brain, causing significant damage and further complicating his condition.

Although doctors were eventually able to stop the internal bleeding, the immense stress on Ethan's body led to multiple organ failure. His liver and kidneys began shutting down, and doctors discovered he had developed a severe bacterial infection in his bloodstream that was resistant to treatment. Despite every effort and the use of powerful antibiotics, his body was simply too weak to fight the infection.

On January 16, Ethan began bleeding into his lungs. Despite the tireless efforts of the medical teams who fought so hard to save him, Ethan passed away later that day.

Ethan's journey was filled with challenges no child should ever have to face, yet he showed extraordinary strength and courage every step of the way. His story is one of resilience, love, and determination, and his memory continues to live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
